Course Overview
We use the Classical Trivium Core Series Latina Christiana Book I. Despite its ecclesiastical overtones, it is the only introduction to Latin for this age group I have found that starts with the basics of conjugation and declension. We will not be praying in Latin class, but we will discuss the church's role in helping to preserve the Latin language. Though the book is a workbook, we are using it as a textbook; I am photocopying worksheet pages so that the students can fill them out for study purposes.
We will also approach classical literature, beginning with Greek mythology in modern (D'aulaires and others) and ancient (Hesiod, Homer, Apollodorus and others) texts. We will dabble in the writings of Aristotle and Plato. We will also use translated Latin texts from Virgil, Ovid and others as we progress along the timeline. We will begin to explore the history of the Roman Empire, mostly by broadly locating the ancient writings we use in their historic contexts.
